A Task Force was created and charged with developing and suggesting a plan that would consider whether or not the University should be a smoke-free campus. This task force reports their suggestions to the Campus Sustainability Committee for use by the Chancellor and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, to consider the proposal.

- The Task Force needs to identify:
- All issues pertaining to a smoke-free campus
- Constituencies that need to be consulted
- Issues that may arise
- Find services and programs that may be available to the University community to assist with smoking cessation
- The Task Force is continuing to review the issue and working with the following groups:
- University Senate regarding support by the campus community of a non-smoking environment.
- The University Wellness Committee and the Office of Human Resources in developing suggested smoking cessation services.
- The school of Environmental Science and Forestry regarding development of complementing programs.
- The City of Syracuse regarding prohibiting smoking on adjacent City walkways.
- The Student Association and Graduate Student Association regarding potential implementation issues.
- The Carrier Dome management staff regarding potential implementation issues.
- Peer institutions regarding actions taken or being contemplated.
- The office of Public Affairs regarding development of a communication strategy.
