Sustainability Division
Energy and Computing Management Division of Sustainability
Providing leadership to Syracuse University and the global community through the identification and promotion of sustainable practices that reduce the University’s environmental impact in an economically responsible manner.
The ribbon was cut on our new division on July 1, 2007. How did this come about? Glad you asked.
Not an institution to stand still, we at Syracuse University recognized the importance, impact and a need for a campus sustainability program. This was due in part to Chancellor Cantor signing the Presidents’ Climate Commitment (PCC) but it also continued a long tradition of energy management and conservation at Syracuse University since 1972 (link to history).
Energy and Computing Management started to plan this reorganization in early 2007. By restructuring our reporting lines and reassigning duties we were able to devote two staff members full time and have four others slowly extricate themselves from previous duties. Members of this new division hail from Energy Conservation, Space Management, Energy Management and Computing Projects and Analysis. By July 2008 we will have our full complement of six. More about us later…
Our first and foremost goal is a campus-wide greenhouse gas inventory. This is the second tenet of the PCC. This is being accomplished with the assistance of students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering class CIE 475, Sarah Kelsen our ESF work study, and the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
Increasing campus awareness on all things sustainable is where you’ll see us focus a lot of attention. Sustainability will partner with other campus groups and departments to spread the word about sustainability principles on campus. We are out to be change agents for sustainability. We will show you that being sustainable has nothing to do with uncomfortable sacrifices but different ways to look at lifestyle choices. Tips on different ways to shop, travel, save energy, think globally and of course; reduce, reuse, recycle, will all be brought to view. Look for us soon in a meeting place, rotunda or celebration near you.

Chief Sustainability Officer
And now, our staff:
Ann-Catherine Browne, Database Coordinator, joined Energy and Computing Management in 2005 to assist with the FAMIS space management system. In this role, she has been working with CPDC and other departments across campus to keep the building and room inventory current and create queries and reports in response to internal requests for space information. Prior to joining the University, Ann-Catherine worked as a technical writer in the medical software industry. She has also taught Business Writing at the college level and worked in academic computer support. Ann-Catherine holds a Master’s degree in Technical and Scientific Communication from Miami University in Ohio and a Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology/History from the College of Wooster. You can reach her at 315-443-5887 or afbrowne@syr.edu.
Melissa Cadwell, Marketing Manager, has worked for Syracuse University since 1987. She joined Energy and Computing Management in January 2005. Rick Martin, Principal Project Analyst, is leading SU’s effort to conduct a Greenhouse Gas Inventory covering all emissions resulting from the existence and operation of the university. This inventory is required by the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, and will be followed by development and implementation of a master plan to reduce SU’s greenhouse gas emissions (net of any offsetting activities) to zero. Before joining the Sustainability team, Rick led a long list of projects involving technology implementation, corporate reengineering, policy development and strategic planning. He is a member of the University Sustainability Action Coalition, the North-Eastern College Sustainability Consortium, GreeningUSA, the Project Management Institute, the International Institute for Business Analysis, and the Association for Systems Management. He teaches project management and business analysis for University College’s Center for Business Information Technologies, and is pursuing a MS degree through SU’s School of Education. 315-443-3953 rjmart01@syr.edu
