Sustainability Division
of
Energy Systems and Sustainability Management
Our
Mission
Provide leadership to Syracuse University
and the global community through the identification and promotion of
sustainable practices that reduce the University’s environmental impact in an
economically responsible manner.
Not an institution to stand still, Syracuse University
recognized the need for and potential impact of a campus sustainability division.
This recognition was due in part to Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor’s
decision to sign the American College and University Presidents' Climate
Commitment (ACUPCC), but it also
continued a long tradition of energy management and conservation at Syracuse
University, dating back to 1972 (link
to history).
The Energy Systems and Sustainability Management (ESSM) department (formerly Energy and Computing Management) reorganized in July
2007. By restructuring our reporting lines and reassigning duties, we were able
to devote three staff members full time. The original members of this new division hailed from
Energy Conservation, Space Management, Energy Management and Computing Projects
and Analysis. More about us later…
Our first task was to complete the campus-wide
greenhouse gas inventory. We submitted our completed greenhouse gas inventory (pdf, 783 KB) on
September 12, 2008. The task was accomplished with assistance from students in
the CIE 475 class in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering;
SUNY-ESF work-study student Sarah Kelsen; and the
Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
Currently, we are assisting with the next critical phase of the
University’s carbon neutrality efforts, the Climate Action Plan (CAP). The CAP
is a required component of the ACUPCC and will set the institution's short-term
and long-term strategies, targets and goals for achieving carbon neutrality.
The development of the CAP, completed in September 2009, provides a
blueprint for implementing carbon-neutral initiatives as part of University
operations. Faculty, students and staff are
invited to make suggestions and comments on all facets of this comprehensive program.
The Sustainability Division is partnering with other campus groups and departments
to raise awareness and spread the word about sustainability principles and initiatives (Greening the Orange and How). Our
message emphasizes simple changes that individuals can make to help the
University achieve its goal of carbon neutrality. These changes include new
ways of working, traveling, and saving energy. They also include traditional conservation approaches like thinking
globally and remembering to reduce, reuse and recycle.

informational visit, please email us at sustain@syr.edu.
