Parking and Transit Services
Parking and Transit Services has developed parking initiatives with a sustainable transportation twist. The Park and Ride Program, Carpooling and Ride Sharing Programs and the Zip Car program are all sustainable initiatives that were instituted with faculty, staff and students as the benefiting party. As enrollment increases for these programs the University will see sustainability benefits in the form of less traffic on campus and will notice a decrease in transportation emission on campus
- Carpooling
- Parking and Transit Services has developed a carpool program that provides parking for two or more University employees that commute to work together.
- A valid permit will be issued for use with multiple vehicles; a carpool arrangement allows individuals to share driving responsibilities, lower the cost of commuting and parking, along with reducing parking demand, traffic and carbon emission on campus.
- Applications can be processed in person at the Parking and Transit Services office, located at 621 Skytop road, during the annual permit renewal process
- One-Seat Ride bus service
- This service is an existing transit program offered by Centro to persons commuting from several suburban Syracuse locations.
- This service targets’ the heavily populated employment corridors of downtown Syracuse, Upstate Medical Center and the University.
- The service offers commuters to board a bus at a suburban location and ride to downtown Syracuse, Upstate Medical Center or the University without having to transfer to another bus. The rides generally take less than 30 minutes once on the bus.
- The following locations allow commuters to park and ride one bus to campus and back:
- Camillus
- Central Square
- Fairmount
- Liverpool
- North Syracuse
- Dewitt
- Drop off locations include:
- Bird Library
- College Place
- The benefits of the One- Seat bus service
- Allows commuters the opportunity to take advantaged of public transportation
- Lower cost of commuting
- Generally no parking costs at the park and ride location
- Reduces parking demand at the University
- Reduces traffic on campus
- Lowers the carbon emission on campus
- Round-trip fares range from $2.00 to $2.50 from most location: Central Square location costs $4.50. When purchasing the fares on campus, the rider receives the fares pre-taxed.
- Once on campus, employees can utilize the fare-free shuttle service to all campus facilities if necessary to get to another location on campus.
- Zipcar Program
- Parking and Transit Services sustainable option for people who commute or live on campus and need to use a car for a short period of time. This program is expected to be executed Fall 2008
- The goal of the Zipcar program is to provide convenient access with affordable priced rental cars for short-short term use.
- The vehicles are rented by the hour
- Renters must be 18 years of age or older with a valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record. Zipcar, the company, will be responsible for approving the driving records of all renters.
- The hourly rate is typically $8.00 - $10.00 with annual membership fee of $35.00
- This rate covers all costs including:
- Fuel
- Vehicle
- Insurance
- 24 hour roadside assistance
- Easy signup for use of Zipcar either via telephone or through a website
- Request takes 10 minutes to confirm use of the vehicle
- Renter easily swipes a card on the vehicle to unlock and activate the ignition
- Customers are responsible for cleaning and refueling the vehicle, this is an honor system
- Zipcar company will follow-up with violators
- A prominent location on campus will be provided for the parking of the Zipcar vehicles.
- Hybrid vehicles may be available to further promote the University’s sustainability efforts.
- Parking and Transit Services is working with the following:
- Consultations with Public Affairs to develop a marketing and promotional strategy, press releases and public announcements
- The Comptroller’s Office and the Office of Budget and Planning to establish an accounting and transaction protocols.
- Coordinating with Energy and Computing Management and Information Technology and Services, regarding Zipcar information on the University’s website.
