August 2009: The Last Hurrah of Summer

Cool nights and hot, humid days are telling me that summer is coming to an end. It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating Memorial Day, and now Labor Day is right around the corner. Here on campus, the arrival of students for the fall semester is one of the surest signs that we are heading into autumn and a time of new beginnings. With that said, I want to welcome all of our new subscribers!MORE..

July 2009: A Sustainable Summer Vacation

It never fails: during the month of May, I start thinking about how my family and I will spend our summer vacation. This year, we decided to incorporate sustainability into our vacation plans. I know when I tell people we are taking a sustainable vacation they assume it is all about hiking or biking for miles or trekking across the Appalachian Mountains, but, these are extreme green vacations. What we are doing is incorporating sustainability whenever possible, into our vacation. A sustainable vacation is taking into account your eco-footprint and making as many socially responsible choices as possible, from deciding where to go and how to travel to choosing where to stay.  June 2009: One Person’s Trash is Another’s Treasure

In our April edition on spring cleaning, we recommended setting aside unwanted items for sale or donation. If you have a collection of such items, summer is the perfect time to decide what to do with them. Are your discards in good condition, free from damage and excessive wear? Then why not give someone else a chance to buy them at a fraction of the original price—and put a little cash back in your own pocket? This is another opportunity to make a simple and sustainable choice that benefits you, your community, and the environment. MORE..

April 2009: Sustainable Spring Cleaning

Flowers are blooming, trees are budding and the gray winter days are fading away, telling me that spring has “sprung” in    Central New York. As I leave behind the winter hibernation blues and enter into an invigorating spring mindset, I know I am ready to tackle my green cleaning spring duties. These responsibilities can seem intimidating. To help alleviate the stress    behind these tasks, I have created two lists, for indoor and outdoor green cleaning. Taking one task at a time enables me to  complete all my listed tasks without getting overwhelmed.MORE..

March 2009: The SU Plastic Recycling Cheat Sheet

As a Sustainable News You Can Use subscriber, you probably already faithfully recycle plastic bottles and jugs (without the cap, of course). In Onondaga County and at SU, these items should be recycled if they are made from #1 or #2 plastic. How do you identify #1 or #2 plastic? September 2008: Vampire Power

It is that time of year when we start thinking about vampires, phantoms, ghosts and goblins, some of our favorite scare-us-out-of- our-wits characters.  Are they alive and well?  In a sense, yes there’s probably a vampire lurking near you right now.

Whether or not you’re a fan of vampires, you’re surrounded by them every day.  Oh, not the fictional ones—real ones.  In fact, you're almost certainly looking straight at one, right now! Fictional vampires sustain themselves by taking the vital life out of their victims.  Real–life vampires slowly drain the vital energy out of your home, office or residence.  That’s right, they live on your electricity, and you pay for it, each and every day.  MORE..
